ASEAN Needs More Than Security From the U.S.

In response to China's rising military presence, the United States, Japan and the Philippines strengthened their defence posture in the Indo-Pacific during their trilateral summit in April 2024. Yet the United States' focus on defense and security is alienating many ASEAN states and preventing future cooperation and trade, causing ASEAN to drift towards China and worsening the United States' declining image in Southeast Asia.
