The Mediterranean’s Latin name, Mare Nostrum, means “our sea.” To casual observers, this might suggest an image of maritime space of peace and cooperation. Indeed, for decades, U.S. and NATO maritime preponderance has prevented foreign powers and regional actors from using naval force to settle their disputes at sea.
