Security failures in the Sahel have their roots in the mistrust between communities with different languages, histories, and traditions; in centuries-old conflicts between sedentary and nomadic communities; in disregard for the needs and aspirations of the people in the northern Sahel; and finally, in the unregulated exploitation of natural and mineral resources that threaten traditional ways of life.
