The direct involvement of the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary force sponsored by the Sudanese government, as a partner with the Sudanese Armed Forces in the coup of 2019 established two autonomous armed forces in Khartoum. The unclear lines of authority between the rival security forces, as well the civilian government, made the competition for political authority inevitable and ultimately contributed to the October 2021 coup.
