Xi Jinping, Tear Down This Wall

Thirty-six years ago today, Berlin was still divided: East Berlin was ruled by an authoritarian and communist regime while West Berlin enjoyed a burgeoning democracy. It was against this backdrop that President Reagan delivered one of the most consequential speeches of the 20th century. Standing before the Brandenburg Gate, he called on the Soviet Union to embrace freedom instead of oppression and prosperity instead of economic control. Eighteen months later, the Berlin Wall fell.
