But he matters: the conservative Democrat from West Virginia, America’s second most Republican state, runs counter to the national trend. Joe Biden lost the state heavily in 2020, with only 30 per cent of the vote, but two years previously West Virginians returned Manchin to the Senate with 50 per cent of the vote. They may well give him a third term next year.
