If you want a long-term relationship, buy me a cheap bottle of Chianti and we can sit on the roof and watch the sunset.” My friend is right: no amount of money will win hearts and minds in the vital Indo-Pacific region unless it comes with a credible demonstration of long-term commitment to the region.
