n The Times on Thursday Peter Tiede, chief political correspondent of Bild, penned an extraordinary column about German perceptions of the UK. He described British politics as “populist and simplistic”. He talked of “grinning with schadenfreude” at our travails. He insinuated that the dash for Brexit in a fit of nationalistic pique had weakened European solidarity. The implication was that the mature, solidaristic Germans would never have done anything so corrosive to the western order.
