By this, he meant the policy was merely an enactment of health advice; of science rather than social theory. It’s a fascinating remark, because it’s exactly the kind of thing someone like Malcolm Turnbull used to say about climate change. And yet, in that case, so many within the Coalition instinctively recoiled at that framing. Climate change wasn’t simply a matter of science rather than ideology. A standard Coalition move for more than a decade has been to cast those insisting on climate urgency as ideologues.
