President Biden has reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and collective defense and has stated that a strong European Union is in the U.S. interest. The value ascribed to allies and partners is evident in the Interim Security Strategy, which calls for working with allies to “promote fair distribution of power” and “reinvigorate and modernize our alliances and partnerships.” Reflecting its own eagerness to work with the incoming administration, the European Union released its EU-U.S. workplan, “A New Transatlantic Agenda for Global Change,” prior to the U.S. inauguration.
