We've Gotten Into a Mess in Libya

That assessment has been rendered redundant – and not just by events in Libya. Ever since anti-government protests erupted throughout the Middle East at the start of the year, the Government has thrown its weight behind the reform movements, even though it was by no means clear that the protesters entertained pro-Western sympathies. Thus, even though Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president, was a loyal supporter of British interests for 30 years, both Mr Cameron and William Hague backed the protesters’ demands for him to stand down. This week, Egypt’s interim government said that it wanted to restore diplomatic relations with Iran, after a breach lasting 30 years.
