Post coalition omne animal triste est, as Galen nearly said; post coalition all animals are sad. Well, just about all press animals, who cannot bear acts of accord. Witness John Humphrys’ stricture to Theresa May yesterday, as one laying down a natural law: “The idea that wise men and women will agree and put aside their differences — the real world isn’t like that.”
Well actually, it often is. In practical politics it is usually the differences that are contrived and the concordances that make sense. I speak as one who is not asked on various programmes once it becomes clear that I don’t hold one of two polarised views on whatever the topic may be.
