William Hague, our new Foreign Secretary, flies to Washington today determined to put Britain's relations with America firmly back on an even footing. By doing so he has provided a clear demonstration of where our country's international priorities lie.
Our relations with America have fluctuated wildly in the past 13 years, between the poodleism of Tony Blair's close association with George W Bush and the awkwardness that characterised Gordon Brown's attempts to bond with the White House. But Mr Hague, who entertains ambitions to revive Britain's standing as a global player, is keen to bring a degree of stability to what Mr Obama this week described as "the special relationship between our two countries".
