The New Republic

Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes bought the venerable publication The New Republic in March, and immediately installed himself as both publisher and editor-in-chief. Hughes, 28, a former social media director for the Obama presidential campaign, pledged to "aggressively adapt to the newest information technologies without sacrificing our commitment to serious journalism." To a large extend, Hughes has succeeded in reinvigorating the 98-year-old publication as a serious voice in all things political, foreign and domestic. TNR's website traffic has, as a result, more than quintupled its 2008 levels.  "We're in the midst of reinvention here. With our new ownership, we're reshaping our approach to journalism and the web," says Editor Frank Foer, who returned as editor after Hughes took over the publication. "In addition to the rigorous analysis we've always hosted, we're placing a real emphasis on storytelling that embeds the greatest issues of the day in compelling narrative. ... [N]ext year, we'll launch a new website with new features that will stretch us in exciting journalistic directions."
