#5 Sri Lanka
Religion is not simply a matter of personal interest in Sri Lanka: it is a mandatory subject in the country's public schools. Buddhism is the predominant religion in Sri Lanka, with deep roots in the country's history. An estimated 70 percent of Sri Lankans practice the oldest school of the Buddhist faith, known as Theravada. Hindus, Muslims and Christians (vestiges of the country's Portuguese colonial history) are also represented among Sri Lanka's faithful. Sri Lankans may choose from one of these four major faiths to study in school. Global Top 5s is a monthly feature by RealClearWorld.com powered by Gallup's worldwide research.
