Indonesia is often hailed as the model Muslim-majority country, emerging from a period of repressive government into a period of increasing liberalization and reform. Indonesia guarantees religious freedom in its constitution and is home to Protestant, Catholic, Hindu and Buddhist minorities, although the state only grants official recognition to six religious groups. Religion plays a significant role in Indonesian life, but it has also led to conflict and violence. As Sara Schonhardt reported, tensions have risen been increasing between Indonesia's Christian and Muslim populations, and Elwin Tobing warned recently in the Jakarta Post that religious intolerance was on the rise.
