Many countries earn respect for their leadership roles through military commitments or foreign aid. But in Burundi, India appears to be doing it with frying pans. As part of a newly minted partnership, which saw the establishment of the country's first diplomatic mission in India in 2009, Burundi has begun to import cooking and kitchen equipment from India due to its low cost. But India's interests in Burundi go beyond cookware: Bujumbura is seeking to develop its mineral resources with a variety of international partners. Of particular interest is the village of Karonge, which has significant deposits of Rare Earth minerals used for high tech electronics and missile guidance systems.
