Iraq
Iraq registered an official execution count of at least 129 people in 2012, and it was the only other jurisdiction in the Mideast other than the Palestinian Authority to see an increase in reported executions (double their 2011 total). According to Amnesty, Iraq executed at least five women in 2012 and executed 34 of its prisoners in a single day. Most capital offenses are terrorism-related and several of those killed in 2012 were former members of Saddam Hussein's Baathist regime, such as Abid Hamid Mahmoud, Saddam's presidential secretary, who was executed in June.
