The only African state in the top ten, Gambia had not executed anyone for almost 30 years only to resume the practice in 2012. Indeed, nine people were reportedly executed in a single day in secret, according to Amnesty, many of whom were sentenced "after unfair or politically motivated trials," Amnesty noted.
