Lebanon
Much like Israel and the Palestinian Territories, the U.N.'s relationship with Lebanon has often been a contentious one. Originally intended to monitor the withdrawal of occupying forces from Israel, Turtle Bay's presence in Lebanon - more formally known as the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) - has instead become a fixture in the country. Its presence in Lebanon only grew following the 2006 between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah, as U.N. Resolution 1701 further ensconced what had become a seemingly indefinite mission. Ostensibly positioned along the southern border of Israel to keep the peace, the U.N. is often seen - on both sides of the border - as the unwitting and enabling milksops of cross-border tensions and violence.
