Nations United?
In his now infamous critique of the United Nations, former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton once remarked that "there is no such thing as the United Nations. There is only the international community, which can only be led by the only remaining superpower, which is the United States." He added, "If the U.N. Secretariat building in New York lost 10 stories, it wouldn't make a bit of difference." Bolton's words, though clearly exaggerated, may resonate with many around the world who see the United Nations as either biased or negligent in its mission. There most certainly is, however, a U.N., and its record often resembles a patchwork of good deeds coupled with scandalous disappointment. Though offshoots such as UNICEF do remarkable work worldwide, highly publicized failures such as the Oil-for-Food Programme in Iraq have often led to very public opprobrium and condemnation for the international body.
