Why should America do more abroad?
Danielle Pletka argues that Hillary Clinton's address yesterday marks a major retreat from world leadership:
Clinton declares, â??For the United States, global leadership is both a responsibility and an unparalleled opportunity.â? She then proceeds to describe what amounts to an abdication of American leadershipâ??the international version of â??honey, I love you so much and believe so much in our marriage that I want to work to help you be a better husband, teach you how to clean the house, and help you come to the understanding that youâ??re a deadbeat.â? At home, this is called burden sharing, but usually it means â??I want to do less.â? And that is Clintonâ??s message to the world: America wants to do less.
Leave aside the question of whether this is what the Obama administration is in fact doing. What I want to know is why this is so terrible: why shouldn't other nations do more?
